Ann Demeulemeester J-Cut Cargo Pants

Hailing from a group of influential Belgian designers trained at the Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts in the early 80s, Ann Demeulemeester initially had no interest in fashion, and it wasn’t until she went to art school that she began to explore the possibility of a career as a fashion designer. By 1985, Demeulemeester had moved on to become a freelance designer and eventually created her first clothing line, BVBA 32, with her newly-wed husband. In 1987 she debuted her first line titled “Light” under her eponymous label. While she later separated her men’s and women’s collections, for a decade Demeulemeester showed the two together. “Initially everyone thought it was crazy to have men and women parade together. But men and women live together and share the same things, why shouldn’t they do it on the catwalk as well?” Her work has always presented a heavy focus on women’s clothing, featuring asymmetrical silhouettes - the duality of sculptured body on one side, and abstract body on the other side. She is known for her neutral color palette and monochromatic pieces.
